Struggling to think of gift ideas? Searching for someone who already has everything? Or just downright tired of looking and terrible at gifting?
In recent years, my family and I have decided to give donations to organizations in need on each other's behalf. It's a wonderful way to give back to the community, and it often goes further than those last-minute gifts.
It started with my grandparents. They have always been involved in their community, giving back in every way they could. As their grandchildren grew older and insistent on giving gifts (even though they were equally as insistent on not needing or wanting anything), we decided on an arrangement that benefited beyond us. In lieu of gifts, we chose an organization or charity close to our hearts, donating on the receiving end's behalf.
Not long after, my siblings and I chose to do the same. As the years went by, we realized not only was gifting becoming harder, but also unnecessary. We didn't need or want the same things we did growing up, and we now have the opportunity to provide those things and more to others in need. With the cost of living soaring and times becoming increasingly difficult, these charity organizations and families within our community need help more than ever.
Not everyone is in a position to donate, but donating is not always in the form of monetary value. Time and effort are equally appreciated and are a wonderful way to give back, while spending time with loved ones and involving yourselves in the community. Volunteering exists at local organizations, such as food banks, soup kitchens, health centres, retirement facilities, charities, and the list goes on. It's a great way to spread cheer throughout the holiday season, as well as the rest of the year.
