Guelph Lake Conservation Area stays open all year. Since October 16, though, it has been largely self-serve. Camping ended October 15. Until April 30, the gatehouse is staffed on weekends only and the washroom buildings are closed. Victoria Road Recreation Centre is the east end's main indoor fallback, and it is running its 50-metre pool as a 25-metre pool for now. Put those together and the cold months reshape the east end's outdoor routine. Guelph Lake turns into a weekend outing that takes some planning, while the short trails tucked between Grange Road, Eastview Road and Watson Parkway handle the weekday walks.
What Changed at Guelph Lake on October 16
The 420-hectare conservation area at 7743 Conservation Road is best known for its two beaches, its paddling and the Hillside Festival's Island Stage. In the off-season, the Grand River Conservation Authority's Guelph Lake page describes a quieter place to visit.
| At Guelph Lake | Through October 15 | October 16 to April 30 |
|---|---|---|
| Camping | Open from May 1 | Closed |
| Gatehouse | Open more of the week | Weekends only |
| Washroom buildings | Open, with hot and cold potable water | Unavailable |
| Paying for day use | Gatehouse or online ePass | Online ePass whenever the gatehouse is closed |
| Life jacket loaner, firewood, ice | Available at the gatehouse | Only during gatehouse hours |
The washroom closure applies to the buildings in Lower Parkside campground, Sandy Bay campground and near the Main Beach. The GRCA lists vault toilets separately as being "located throughout the conservation area." For a weekday walk, plan as if you'll find no staff and no running water when you arrive.
Paying When Nobody Is at the Gate
On weekdays, and any time the gatehouse is closed, the GRCA asks visitors to register and pay through its online ePass system when they arrive. The current Guelph Lake fee page lists these day-use rates:
- $9.50 per adult
- $7.50 per senior or person with disabilities
- $4 per child aged 4 to 12, free for age 3 and under
- $19 per vehicle through ePass when the attendant is off duty
For two adults sharing a car, the vehicle rate works out the same as paying for each of them. Adding another adult or a child aged 4 to 12 makes the vehicle rate the cheaper choice. The GRCA notes that fees can change without notice, so check the page before you go.
What the Lake Offers Once It Freezes
Once the snow and ice arrive, Guelph Lake offers more to do. The GRCA lists 10 kilometres of multi-use trails that it grooms for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as conditions permit, alongside 10 kilometres of hiking trails through wooded areas. Snowshoes can be rented when conditions allow, and the fee page lists adult and child snowshoe rental at $17.50.
Ice fishing on the reservoir is allowed when ice conditions are suitable. Temporary ice huts are permitted but must be removed once fishing is done for the day. The GRCA also says the conservation area or its trails can close from time to time, sometimes without notice, after a storm or for a special event. It points visitors to its Conservation Area and Activity Status page for current skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing conditions.
On a winter Saturday, that makes Guelph Lake a good outing for anyone who checks conditions, pays ahead and packs accordingly. On a Tuesday after work, the lake still costs the same entry fee, with fewer services than it offered in summer.
The Nature Centre's Grounds Are the Public Part
Guelph Lake's newest building opened recently. The GRCA held the grand opening of the new Guelph Lake Nature Centre on September 4, 2025. When construction began, GuelphToday reported on a one-storey building designed by +VG Architects and built by Dakon Construction, with a multipurpose room that divides into two classrooms and an adjacent 850-metre trail. The GRCA's opening announcement describes the finished learning grounds as including nature trails, forest play areas, pollinator gardens, an Indigenous tea garden and water features.
The building is mainly used for booked programs. The GRCA's programs page lists day camps, birthday parties, and private school, homeschool and preschool programs as "not currently being offered." Scout and Guide badge programs and youth and community group programs have "limited availability" through a request form. The centre's own page lists no regular public drop-in hours. For a household planning a winter visit, the grounds and trails around the centre are the dependable draw. Getting inside the building takes a booking.
Indoors on Victoria Road, a Shorter Pool and Longer Weekend Hours
Inside, closer to Grange Road, Victoria Road Recreation Centre at 151 Victoria Road North is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. through fall and winter. In summer, its weekend hours run only 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., so the cold-season schedule adds hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
The pool is shorter than usual. The City's page says the lap pool will stay in a 25-metre configuration "until further notice" because of ongoing bulkhead maintenance, and that staff are working with contractors. Normally that lap pool is 50 metres with six lanes, or 12 lanes when split into two 25-metre pools. It is kept at 27 to 28°C. The leisure pool next to it has a ramp entry and is kept at 30 to 31°C. The City hasn't given a repair date, so lane swimmers who prefer full-length laps should plan on 25 metres for now.
The City's Fall/Winter 2026 drop-in swim schedule runs September 8 to March 28 and includes lane, leisure and public swims at Victoria Road. The City recommends registering in advance, and drop-in registration opens up to 23 hours ahead. On the arena side, the single ice pad hosts drop-in skates from September 2026 to May 2027. The skating schedule lists adult and senior, family, sensory-friendly and public skates, plus shinny. Check exact times on the live schedules before heading over.
The Trails That Need No Gatehouse
The east end's everyday outdoor time happens closer to home. The City's trail listings include two short routes that start right in the neighbourhood:
- Laura Baily Memorial Trail, 1.5 km. Runs from Grange Road Park through the Hadati Creek Wetlands to Buckthorn Crescent, connecting through Grange Road, Eastview Road, Trimble Court, Ireland Place and Starwood Drive.
- Watson Creek Trail, 1.5 km. Runs from Watson Parkway North and Grange Road through Joe Veroni Park, Severn Drive and Fleming Road to Watson Road North.
For longer outings without an entry fee, the 4.1-kilometre Eramosa River Trail runs from the Covered Bridge to Stone Road by way of Victoria Road South. The GRCA also notes the 3.4-kilometre Speed River Trail, which follows the river from Victoria Road near Guelph Lake Conservation Area to Speedvale Avenue. Together they let you reach the edge of Guelph Lake's landscape by riverside path without going through its gate.
Through November, there may still be work crews along these routes. The City's 2026 invasive species removal notice lists buckthorn treatment between April and November at Grange Road Park near Hill Trail and Creighton Avenue, and at the stormwater management ponds at Buckthorn Crescent and 93 Severn Drive. Those last two sit at points named along the Laura Baily and Watson Creek trails. Work at each site generally takes three to five days, weather permitting. The City says park facilities and most trails stay open during the work, and asks people to keep out of marked work areas.
Eastview Park at 800 Watson Parkway North is the other large green space nearby. In a March 2026 notice, the City closed the park's road entrances to vehicles until its standard spring opening, kept it open to people on foot and on bicycles, and planned drainage and sod repairs for later in 2026. Check the City's current park status before driving over expecting to park inside.
Where the Season Leads in December
The nearest large holiday event is downtown. Spirit of the Season runs December 4 to 6 and December 11 to 13, 2026, with a Santa Parade, a Santa Run, the Mayor and Council tree lighting, and indoor and outdoor Christmas marketplaces. Before then, the east end's own options are Guelph Lake's groomed trails once the snow arrives, a 25-metre lap pool on Victoria Road, and the 1.5-kilometre loops starting at Grange Road Park and Watson Parkway.
At Andra Arnold, we like to keep track of how the places our clients use every day change from season to season, from Guelph Lake's weekend-only gatehouse to the Victoria Road pool.
