Guelph Named Canada's Best Place to Live in 2026

There's something special about Guelph. Ask anyone who calls this city home, and chances are they'll have their own reasons for loving it. Maybe it's the familiar faces at the local coffee shop, the beautiful historic neighbourhoods, the trails winding along the Speed and Eramosa Rivers, or simply the feeling of belonging to a community that genuinely cares.

Now, the rest of Canada is taking notice, too.

For the second consecutive year, Guelph has been named the best place to live in Canada by real estate marketplace Zolo. The 2026 rankings, recently highlighted by Daily Hive, evaluated 36 Canadian cities based on factors including housing affordability, household income, employment, safety, population growth, healthcare access, walkability and quality of life.

And once again, our Royal City came out on top. For those of us fortunate enough to live and work here, it's wonderful recognition of something we've known for a long time.

What Makes Guelph Canada's Best Place to Live?

According to Daily Hive's report on Zolo's 2026 rankings, Guelph stands out for its strong household incomes, relatively low unemployment and low crime rates.

Interestingly, Guelph wasn't the most affordable city on the list. Daily Hive reports a benchmark home price of $720,200 in September 2026, making it the most expensive of the top ten communities.

That makes the recognition particularly meaningful. A great place to live isn't necessarily the place with the lowest home prices. It's the place where the quality of life makes you want to put down roots. And Guelph has so much to offer.

A City That Still Feels Like a Community

One of the things I love most about Guelph is its sense of community. Despite the city's growth, there's still a wonderful small-town feeling here. Local businesses know their customers, neighbours look out for one another, and people genuinely show up when their community needs support.

From local fundraisers and community festivals to the many volunteers and organizations working to make Guelph a better place, there's a real spirit of generosity here.

I've always believed that a strong community is built on relationships. It's something that guides both my personal involvement in Guelph and the way our real estate team approaches its work. Because a home is about so much more than the property itself. It's about the people, places and connections that surround it.

Beautiful Neighbourhoods, Each With Their Own Personality

Another thing that makes Guelph so special is the diversity of its neighbourhoods. Spend an afternoon walking through St. George's Park or the Old University neighbourhood, and you'll discover beautiful mature trees, historic architecture and homes full of character.

Head downtown, and you'll find independent shops, restaurants, cafés and a thriving arts and cultural community. The Ward, also known as Two Rivers, offers its own distinctive history and creative energy, while neighbourhoods like Kortright Hills, Westminster Woods and the south end provide different combinations of housing, parks and everyday conveniences.

And just beyond the city, the surrounding communities of Wellington County, from Elora and Fergus to Puslinch and Guelph-Eramosa, offer even more opportunities to enjoy rural living, beautiful countryside and a little extra space.

There isn't one single version of life in Guelph, and that's part of what makes it such a wonderful place to call home. Whether you're buying your first property, raising a family, downsizing or looking for a lifestyle change, finding the right neighbourhood can make all the difference. You can explore all of our neighbourhood guides to get a feel for each one.

Green Spaces and Room to Enjoy Life

For a growing city, Guelph has an incredible connection to nature. Riverside Park, the Arboretum at the University of Guelph, Exhibition Park and the trails along our rivers provide beautiful places to walk, cycle, explore and unwind.

Guelph Lake Conservation Area offers another opportunity to get outdoors, while the surrounding countryside provides easy access to scenic trails, conservation areas and rural landscapes.

These are the everyday things that don't always appear in a real estate listing but can have an enormous impact on how much we enjoy where we live. A favourite walking route. A neighbourhood park. The ability to spend a quiet afternoon outdoors without travelling far from home. Sometimes, it's the simplest things that make a place feel special.

A Strong Local Economy With Connections Beyond the City

Guelph also offers an appealing balance of local opportunity and regional connectivity. The city is home to the University of Guelph and a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, agriculture, food innovation, education, technology and professional services.

Its location within Southwestern Ontario also provides connections to Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area. For people considering a move from a larger urban centre, Guelph can offer a different pace of life without necessarily giving up access to career opportunities, amenities and cultural experiences.

Of course, commuting needs and lifestyle priorities are different for everyone. That's why understanding the community, not just the property, is such an important part of making a move.

What Does This Recognition Mean for Guelph Real Estate?

Being named Canada's best place to live is something worth celebrating, but it doesn't mean that every home or neighbourhood will be the right fit for every buyer. Affordability remains an important consideration, and Guelph's housing market presents different opportunities and challenges depending on your needs, budget and stage of life.

What this recognition does reinforce is the importance of looking beyond the numbers when making a real estate decision. A home's value isn't measured only in square footage, finishes or its sale price. It's also about the lifestyle it supports, the community around it and whether it feels like the right place for you.

For buyers considering a move to Guelph, taking the time to explore different neighbourhoods and understand the local market is invaluable. And for homeowners already here, this recognition is another reminder of what makes our community so special.

Proud to Call Guelph Home

I've had the privilege of helping people buy and sell homes throughout Guelph and Wellington County for many years. Along the way, I've come to appreciate just how personal the idea of home really is.

Every client has a different story. Every move represents a new chapter. And every neighbourhood has something unique to offer. Being recognized as Canada's best place to live is wonderful news, but what makes me proudest is the community behind that recognition: the neighbours, small businesses, volunteers, families and organizations that make Guelph what it is.

Because ultimately, it's the people who make a place feel like home.

Whether you've called Guelph home for decades or you're just beginning to explore the possibility, we'd love to help you discover what makes this community so special. At Andra Arnold & Associates, we're proud to live, work and give back in the community we serve. And as always, we're Here to Help.
